Fifth District Commander
Well not too long after working as Captain of the Night something happened with the captain of the Fifth District requiring his movement to another unit. I was talking to Julie about this at the same time texting my friends about how funny it would be if they made me take it. It seems like that very minute I got a call from Chief Ganthier. Once again, he struggled to find the words. I was the only “spare” captain and had run a district for a year already, so I got assigned to cover the Fifth District until they figured out what they were going to do. Meanwhile, the all-important job at night went unfilled. (eyeroll)
This meant back to MAX meetings, this time only three city council members rather than the four I had in the First District, but back to community meetings, crime issues, personnel issues, fleet issues, etc. I had a great team there and figured it wasn’t going to be forever – so I took that job in stride.
By the time it was over 6 weeks later, the officers were begging me to stay, as if that was my choice. It’s hard for me to write things like that because I’d rather throw up than brag, but it’s nice to be appreciated. Back to Captain of the Night from mid-April to early June.
